Human Rights Watch (HRW) Calls On Malaysian Government To Lift Gay Ban

KUALA LUMPUR: Human Rights Watch (HRW) has urged the Government to rescind a police ban on the fourth annual Seksualiti Merdeka festival and protect all citizens from discrimination.
Its Asia Division deputy director Phil Robertson and director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights (LGBT) Programme Graeme Reid stated this in a letter to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak yesterday.

Copies of the letter were sent to the Deputy Prime Minister, Home Minister and Women, Family and Community Development Minister.

The festival, which had taken place since 2008, was scheduled to be held from yesterday to Sunday.

HRW said the event organisers claimed they had been subjected to a barrage of harassment and threats of violence via phone calls, SMSes and through the social media since police announced the ban, and called for a full investigation.
