Sonia Gandhi Returning To Work
Sources said Sonia would return either tomorrow or in a few days, depending on the post-hurricane air travel situation in the US.
For reasons of privacy, the nature of the illness and the recovery trail were kept a secret till Priyanka Gandhi recently went public saying Sonia, who has had surgery in the US, was fine and set to resume her political responsibilities.
Rahul Gandhi’s supporters are relieved that the spotlight on the young general secretary would reduce, leaving him free to focus on next year’s Uttar Pradesh polls.
Party insiders said Rahul had made a conscious effort not to take charge despite his inclusion in a core group set up to run the party in Sonia’s absence. The efforts to scale down his role in the Anna Hazare crisis has drawn flak but the strategy was deliberate, they say.
Rahul’s grooming is being done slowly, mindful of criticism that Indira Gandhi had given younger son Sanjay too much power too quickly and, to a lesser extent, to elder son Rajiv too.
Congress leaders recognise that Sonia’s task of reviving the party has been more daunting than that of Indira, who was not hemmed in by coalition compulsions. On the other hand, the Congress during those times had an assured vote bank of Brahmins, Dalits, minorities and tribals.

Eid Greetings To All Muslims
2012 is President Obama's to lose?
Paul Harris
guardian.co.uk, Tuesday 30 August 2011 21.54 BST
For Democrats, the Republican field for 2012 looks like the gift that keeps on giving.
The candidates drawing the most attention – like Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann and Ron Paul – are seen as far too extreme to stand a chance in a national presidential election. Meanwhile, the often assumed frontrunner, Mitt Romney, is a charisma-free zone who failed to win his party's nomination in 2008 and does not seem to have improved much. Scattered around these flawed leaders are strange fringe candidates – like Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich and Herman Cain – and Sarah Palin, the Alaska governor turned reality TV star, who is more celebrity than politician.
The one GOP name with a compelling personal history and potential for a broad constituency of support – Jon Huntsman – has fizzled into virtual obscurity.
How can anyone from this Republican slate win? It is a reassuring thought for liberals. It is also a potentially catastrophic and complacent one. For Republicans do not have to win the 2012 contest in order to capture the White House. They just have to watch Obama lose it.
If you stop looking at perceived Republican weaknesses and, instead, look at Obama's problems, then the picture for 2012 looks a good deal less rosy. And in America's virtual two-party system, there is only one winner when Democrats lose: Republicans.
Democrat problems are serious. First, there is the issue of disillusionment among Obama's base. While liberal activists – where disappointment and anger with Obama is acute – are far from representative of Middle American voters, they do provide the key organisation for "get out the vote" action on election day. No one thinks that effort will be anywhere near as large or enthusiastic as it was in 2008. Indeed, some labour unions already plan to boycott the Democratic national convention in North Carolina.
Second, there are the polls. At a time when Obama should be lording it over any of this GOP field, simply on the basis of incumbency and name recognition, he is far from dominant. Perry – whom liberals deride as an unelectable "George W Bush on steroids" – was beating Obama in the key state of Florida in one recent survey. So was Romney.
Other polls in other states have Obama ahead, but what is striking about them as how Obama's number often lurks in the 40s, which is hardly a ringing endorsement. Even Ron Paul – whom the Republican establishment itself derides – was within two points of Obama in one recent national Gallup poll and within a single percentage point in a Rasmussen study. These numbers do not show Republican strength. But they do reveal Democrat weakness – and that should be given equal weight in a two-horse race.
Then just look at Gallup's tracking of Obama's job approval ratings. Over the summer, a grim gap has emerged with now some 55% of Americans disapproving of Obama's performance compared to an anaemic 38% who approve. This is undoubtedly linked to fears over a double-dip recession and the terrible persistence of cripplingly high levels of joblessness in the economy.
Economic conditions are often the key deciding factor in elections. By that metric, Obama's prospects look grim and could get a lot grimmer.
All of this could lead to someone as seemingly unlikely as Rick Perry becoming the 45th president of the United States and the most powerful person on earth. Seemingly "no hope" candidates have certainly won before due to their opponent's poor performance. Just think of Bill Clinton. The obscure Arkansas governor, hampered by a sex scandal, emerged from a pygmy field of Democrats in 1992 to take on George HW Bush, the incumbent victor of the Gulf war. But Bush ran a dreadful campaign, got hit by an economic downturn and then sideswiped by Ross Perot. Clinton won with just 43% of the vote.
Or look at 2000. It pitted the experienced Vice President Al Gore against the folksy cowboy candidate of George W Bush. Bush did not run a great campaign. But Gore ran a terrible one, failing even to win his home state of Tennessee. What should have been a romp for Gore, narrowed down to Florida, and eventually, Bush won via a court decision. You can argue about that event until blue in the face, but what is inarguable is that Gore should never have let Bush get close.
So, Democrats surveying the GOP's current "carnival of crazy" – where Perry questions evolution and Bachmann sees Hurricane Irene as a sign from God on government spending – should not feel victory is assured. The GOP does not have to wrest the White House away from Obama; he might just give it away.

Bkay Nair Prefers Malay Men
"I've always been drawn to Malay men. I think they are more caring and romantic as compared to men of other races," says the actress who of Malayali descent.
"My friends from primary school and secondary school have all been Malay as well," Bkay tells the press at a promotional event for her latest film, "Scandal" recently.
The actress added that her family has always been open about her choices of men. "There have been inter-racial marriages in my family so dating men from other races is not a big deal," she reveals. "In fact, two of my uncles have embraced Islam."
Bkay also shares that she has been getting a lot of offers to play Malay characters. "I'm actually very comfortable playing Malay women on screen," says the actress.
MCA can't admit Chinese being marginalised
MCA had in a private meeting with US diplomats conceded that the ethnic Chinese in the country was being marginalised but could not admit it as it was bound to support the government's position and by extension, Umno.
This is according to a confidential cable between Washington and its embassy in Kuala Lumpur released by whistle blower site Wikileaks, detailing a meeting with the embassy's political office with then MCA vice-president Ong Tee Keat ( left ).
The cable, dated Oct 19, 2006, was released this month. "Of course we are marginalised, big business to small stall owners know that - but MCA cannot admit it," he was quoted as saying to US diplomats.
Ong who later went on to become MCA's president before being ousted by Chua Soi Lek, had, according to the cable, said that the party had to remain silent over Chinese discontent.
According to the communiqué, Ong was quoted as saying that "silence is sometimes the only valid response" in reaction to Chinese constituents' discontent over MCA and Gerakan's support of the government.
'MCA rely on Umno's crumbs'
The cable detailed the former MCA president's lament that the party could previously get Umno's "leftovers" for development projects but now had to rely on what little it could get from the dominant coalition partner.
"There was once a day in Malaysia when MCA would get the leftovers, but now we are just hoping to get some crumbs from the Umno table," Ong reportedly said in the cable.
An example cited was the Ninth Malaysian Plan where none of the 180 planned new schools were vernacular and only two were given after protests from the minority communities.
The cable also said Ong admitted to deep discontent among the Chinese community against the status quo and that MCA would face its greatest electoral challenge in the coming general election.
His concerns became real in the 2008 general election, in which MCA saw its seats in Parliament halved from 31 to 15, while Gerakan was swept out of its home state, losing all its state seats in Penang.
The cable is part of more than 250,000 US State Department communiqués with its embassies throughout the world, leaked to Wikileaks, which has been releasing them in stages since November last year.
Repeated attempts to reach Ong for comments have been futile.

Stephanie Foray Murdered For Refusing Sex
KUALA LUMPUR: French tourist Stephanie Foray was believed to have been struck on the head with a bottle by her assailant when she had refused to have sex with him.
This, police believe, was how the 30-year-old tourist was murdered before her body was buried in a cave in Tioman.DNA test results released late last week confirmed the skeletal remains were that of Foray's.
Sources close to the investigations also revealed that the main suspect in the case, a 36-year-old orchard owner, had led police to a dumping ground on the island where they seized a bottle, believed to be the murder weapon.
Police believe the suspect and the victim had been drinking and she was murdered when she refused to have sex with him. However, it is still not known if the French woman was raped as police are still waiting for the test results.
Pahang CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner T. Narenasegaran said the suspect is expected to be charged with Foray's murder at the magistrate's court in Pekan today. Two other suspects who had been arrested earlier to facilitate investigations have been released on bail.Foray's remains are still at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital mortuary in Kuantan.
Her mother and sister, who arrived here last week to assist in identifying the remains, could not be contacted yesterday. Foray, who worked as a communication officer in France, arrived in Malaysia on May 5 after spending several months touring India and Sri Lanka. After spending two days in Kuala Lumpur, she went to Malacca on May 7 before taking a ferry from Mersing to Tioman. The woman, who travelled alone, was reported missing by her family in France in June after they failed to contact her.Police investigations led them to Tioman where they arrested the suspect after finding Foray's handphone and several Sri Lankan currency notes on him.He later led police to a shallow grave in a cave some 100 metres behind his wooden house.

Harussani: I asked Dr M not to sack Anwar
Hence in Desperation, UMNO & Cohorts play on Religious Issues & Sentiments at the Expense of non Malays & Non Muslims! God Is Great & This same God Of Justice & Love Will Reign Supreme Over This Matter! Period.
SHAH ALAM, Aug 24 — Tan Sri Harussani Zakaria today revealed he had attempted to meet Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamed 13 years ago to advise him against sacking then deputy prime minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He also wanted to ask Dr Mahathir not charge the current Pakatan Rakyat (PR) defacto leader for sodomy.
The Perak Mufti said he was concerned back then that Anwar’s sacking would bring about split Malays, and that he had repeatedly cautioned the former prime minister to think about an alternative solution.
“I have told Dr Mahathir to stop (to not do it) but there are three things he would not stop. The first was to sack Anwar. (When that was about to happen), I was barred from meeting the prime minister.
“I said sacking Anwar will not have a small effect it can split the Malays...when he (Dr Mahathir) wanted to charge Anwar for sodomy, I said even I you wanted to sack Anwar do it through a Cabinet reshuffle. Put him in another ministry,” Harussani said today during a religious forum here.
He was charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet and was later convicted and jailed for both offences. The Federal Court however overturned his sodomy conviction in 2004 after finding contradictions in the prosecution’s case.
Anwar is currently facing a second sodomy charge, where he is charged with sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan. He faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted under section 377B of the Penal Code.
Harussani stressed that Dr Mahathir’s actions in sacking Anwar had effectively split Malays.
“I said that if you sack Anwar you divide the Malays, I also said don’t charge for sodomy...I said if there are no witnesses there would be dire consequences,” added the Perak mufti.
Also present at the forum was PAS information chief Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man and Umno ulama Fathul Bari Mat Jahya. The forum was chaired by ex-Perlis mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin.
Harussani also commented on the current controversy surrounding the Selangor Islamic department’s (Jais) recent raid on a church, and said that it was compulsory for Muslims to defend their faith, as it is an offence for non-Muslims to proselytise to Muslims. “We have to wage a jihad... if there is no jihad we are done for,” he added.

Love is in the Air!" Ryan Seacrest, who was there with Julianne Hough, Tweeted en route: "On the way to @kimkardashian's wedding…Traffic so bad on the [Highway] 101 I had to stop at cold stone creamery." Later, he described the event as "Beautiful..kim looked regal, a perfect night. I just danced with the whole family." In a tent separate from where the ceremony took place, Robin Thicke introduced the married couple as "Mr. and Mrs. Humphries," before Kim and Kris danced their first dance to Thicke's "Angels." Melayu yang befikiran "satu hala" tidak bertamadun
When one says that something is wrong, everybody must agree. They have become nothing more than robots that have been programmed. Every Malay Family must conform to the same lifestyle, dressing, thinking and mindset, failing of which that household becomes an insult to the Malays and Islam. Very Strange for this time and age.

Utusan Malaysia Has Proven To Be Pariah
It smacks of nothing but character assassination at this time of pending general elections, it lacks taste & it's rather annoying to clear thinking citizens and the world at large.
Legal Action should be taken against this paper (well, if the Judiciary is Independent enough to take action against a Government owned Newspaper).
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 24 — Utusan Malaysia mocked Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today and likened him to Renaissance era artists such as Michaelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci who “like fully naked men and handsome young boys.”
Its assistant chief editor Datuk Zaini Hassan wrote in the Umno-owned newspaper that the opposition leader’s “32-page statement was as usual, complete with quotes from the Quran, former South African President Nelson Mandela, Shakespeare and many others,” in reference to Anwar’s unsworn testimony from the dock during his sodomy trial on Monday.
“Anwar wants to be known as The Renaissance Man of the new millennium. He has even written a book called The Asian Renaissance,” Zaini wrote in his Cuit column today.
He stated in the Malay daily that Michaelangelo and Leonardo “like fully naked men and handsome young boys” and asked readers to look up their works, such as the statue of David and the sketch of the Vitruvian Man — both naked depictions — on online encyclopedia Wikipedia.
Anwar is currently fighting a sodomy charge levelled against him by his former aide Mohamed Saiful Bukhari Azlan who was 22 when the alleged incident happened in 2008.
The former deputy prime minister said in a nearly two-hour testimony from the dock on Monday that this second sodomy charge was a “conspiracy by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak” and denied ever having sex with Saiful.
PKR later said that its de facto leader’s decision to enter an unsworn statement in his defence was an act of protest against “the legal and political establishment’s” trumped-up charges, following in the footsteps of Mandela, who also took the same course of action when charged with treason in 1963.
But Zaini mocked the Permatang Pauh MP, writing that “Anwar using Mandela’s words? Does he want to be known as the Malayan Mandela?”
“He wants his speech to be in high language, with jargon and philosophy, making reporters dizzy... unlike his former boss Dr Mahathir who would use simple language, whether Malay or English,” he wrote in the Malay daily.
This is the second time Anwar has had to defend himself against sodomy claims, the first coming after he was sacked as deputy prime minister by Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad in 1998.
Although Anwar was convicted of the first sodomy charge, it was overturned by the Federal Court in 2004, allowing him to make a political comeback.
He then lead the opposition pact in denying Barisan Nasional (BN) its customary two-thirds majority of Parliament and five state governments in Election 2008.
Over three years after the allegation first surfaced, Anwar is now entering his defence against the charge which could see the Permatang Pauh MP being jailed for up to 20 years, which will likely end his political career.

Maira Nazarbayev linked to "Russian mafia".
On Sunday, prominent Indonesian daily Kompas apologised to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak for a report it published about him and his wife, Rosmah Mansor.
However, Malaysiakini has learnt that the subtle apology, buried in an interview with Najib, was a sudden change of mind by the Kompas top management at the eleventh hour.
The scathing article, titled 'Istri PM Najib dan Cincin 24 Juta Dollar' (PM Najib's wife and US$24 million ring), published in the Aug 4 issue of Kompas , soon found its way into Malaysia's political circles on the Internet.
Among others, the article linked Rosmah with the controversial purchase of a RM24 million ring, and alleged that Rosmah's soon-to-be in-law, Maira Nazarbayev, was linked to the "Russian mafia".
Maira Nazarbayev, of Kazakhstan, is the mother of Daniyar Nazarbayev, who is engaged to Nooryana Najwa, the daughter of Najib and Rosmah ( left ).
The Kompas article described Rosmah as having "a life full of controversies", and linked her to Perimekar, the company alleged to have received multi-million ringgit in commission for the Scorpene submarine procurement.
According to the author, the dubious deal is one of the factors that led to the murder of Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu in 2006.
Realising the article could resurrect issues highly detrimental to Najib's reputation, two of Najib's informal public relations advisers - one of whom is associated with an Indonesian conglomerate - scrambled to do damage control.
Sources told Malaysiakini that the apology demanded by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) was initially rejected by the Kompas editors who stood by the article, especially on the alleged underworld links of Maira, which have been widely publicised on the Internet.
The two advisers of Najib then proceeded to threaten Kompas with legal action, but this too failed to subdue the influential Indonesian daily.
Kompas however agreed to give Najib the right of reply by sending its international editor, Jimmy Harianto, to interview Najib in Putrajaya last Thursday which would allow the prime minister to deny and rebut the allegations.
This explains the strong reactions from PKR leaders on Sunday on micro-blogging website Twitter after Umno Youth Khairy Jamaluddin claimed that Kompas had apologised for its "lies and fabrication", which Khairy had linked to PKR.
PKR leaders who have been following the issue, including communications chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad and PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's press secretary Eekmal Ahmad, immediately rebutted Khairy.
But both Nik Nazmi and Eekmal were taken aback less than one hour later when national news agency Bernama confirmed that Kompas did indeed apologise to Najib on Sunday. Obviously the duo was not aware of Kompas' last-minute reversal.
It was unknown why Kompas made a sudden U-turn, but the sources claim that the decision must have been made under "extraordinary circumstances".
However, the newspaper did not conspicuously publish a full apology - it was more like a ‘half apology'.
The apology was buried in paragraph 10 on page 10 of the newspaper in a report entitled 'PM Najib Razak: Demokrasi Juga Terjadi di Malaysia' (PM Najib Razak: There is democracy in Malaysia too).
The article, an interview with Najib, quoted the premier as denying the allegations in the Kompas report, and was followed by a one-line apology that reads: "Over the said report, Kompas chief editor Rikard Bagun, on Saturday (Aug 20) in Jakarta, specifically sought to apologise to the government leader and his family."
Other than publishing Najib's denial, the daily did not state that the allegations in its article are untrue, and neither did it retract the article, which can still be accessed here .
Several attempts were made to contact Kompas editors on the apology, but Malaysiakini was given the runaround.
Muhyiddin Yassin Should Never Run Malaysia!
PETALING JAYA, Aug 23 — PKR communications chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad alleges Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has taken over the administration of Malaysia from his boss Datuk Seri Najib Razak, as the row over a controversial parliamentary polls panel heats up.
“People used to joke about Rosmah running the country,” he said, referring to the prime minister’s wife, Datin Seri Rosmah.
“Now it’s Muhyiddin who is running the country,” he told reporters after his party’s weekly news conference at headquarters today.
The Selangor state lawmaker’s remark came on the heels of the Najib’s shifting stand over a bi-partisan parliamentary select committee (PSC) he mooted two weeks ago to review the election process.
Putrajaya had been globally condemned for mishandling the Bersih 2.0’s rally in Kuala Lumpur, which saw tens of thousands take to the streets last month to demand electoral reform.
Najib had initially pledged his administration would wait for the outcome from the polls panel before calling for fresh elections.
But Najib is seen to have gone back on his word when he recently said that elections could be called anytime.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar waded into the debate recently when he said it would likely take a year for such a committee to review the issue.
Nik Nazmi urged today the Barisan Nasional to reconsider appointing a member of the opposition party to helm the controversial PSC instead of a putting a minister from his Cabinet.
The PKR man said that in developed democracies, it was the practice for opposition parties to chair parliamentary committees, and named India as an example.
The Seri Setia assemblyman claimed that the Selangor Pakatan Rakyat (PR) government had tried to amend its standing orders to reflect this convention and that then-opposition whip, Datuk Seri Dr Khir Toyo had agreed.
But when the proposal was dropped in the state legislative assembly after BN lawmakers opposed it.
Pusrawi doctor modified Saiful’s medical report
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 23 — Prosecution lawyers in Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy trial have accused a medical officer of modifying details of complainant Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan’s medical examination report on June 28, 2008.
Solicitor-General II Datuk Mohd Yusof Zainal Abiden wasted no time today in attacking the credibility of former Pusrawi hospital doctor Dr Muhd Osman Abd Hamid — who was the first to medically examine Saiful on the day he lodged a police report against Anwar.
Osman told the court that Saiful had complained of pain in his anus and not being able to defecate for a week before the examination. The doctor said that he found Saiful’s anus to be “normal and healthy” after the examination.
Osman then said that Saiful had alleged assault by introduction of plastic into anus, something which Yusof immediately objected to.
When pressed further, the former Pusrawi medical officer then said that Saiful told him after the examination that he “was sodomised and a plastic was inserted.”
At this point, Yusof stated that the “insertion of plastic” was not stated in Osman’s original medical report, and was only added when a further statement was recorded by the police last year.
The lead prosecutor called Osman a “very gullible man”, and stated that the doctor had even agreed to sign a Statutory Declaration (SD) upon requests from lawyers he did not personally know.
Osman agreed to this, and said that at the time he was “very scared.” “You are a very gullible man, you believe everything everyone says. You would do anything for anybody, that’s why I’m saying the notion of plastic inserted into anus was added later. Saiful denied saying this. “I put it to you that he did not say any plastic,” said Yusof.
But Osman insisted Saiful told him otherwise. Anwar is charged with sodomising former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan at a condominium in Bukit Damansara here between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26.
He faces up to 20 years in jail if convicted under section 377B of the Penal Code, but will escape the whipping sentence due to his age.

Dr.Asri: ‘Racism and fanaticism’ exploited in Malaysia for politics
The former Perlis Mufti, who was recently placed on a terror watch list for Wahhabism, told the influential newspaper that the authorities here needed to be more open-minded, adding that the term “Wahhabi” was recklessly used in Malaysia as a derogatory term to slander others.
“Religious authorities in Malaysia should be more open-minded. Their attitude is to force others to think in only one way, and that is not the attitude of a civilised people,” he said, according to an excerpt of the interview found on WSJ’s website yesterday.
He lamented that Malaysia’s more progressive Muslims were “marginalised” by the conservatives who controlled the religious institutions in government, and accused the administration of fearing criticism from the former group.
While Asri insisted that he was not a follower of Wahhabism, he noted that the teaching had its own distinctive contribution for Muslim societies across the globe.
“If ‘Wahhabi’ means inviting people to be fanatical, rigid, stern, uncompromising, and the like, I oppose it. (But) There are also a lot of sound and relevant opinions among them. However, even if we disagree with their views, that doesn’t mean we can accuse them of terrorism,” he said.
Asri was first linked to Wahhabism and the terrorists group Jemaah Islamiah (JI) early last year, along with PAS President Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, former Perlis mentri besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim dan Perlis Mufti Juanda Jaya.
Last month, the National Security Council (NSC) ordered religious authorities to monitor Wahhabism in the country, placing influential former Asri, Juanda and over 40 young Umno ulamas. Putrajaya, however, later agreed that Wahhabism is not a threat to national security.
“In Malaysia, the word ‘Wahhabi’ is quite a mysterious term. Many use the term or slander others by it, without a clue about its meaning.
“In some places, a person is accused of being a Wahhabi for disagreeing with superstitious rituals and beliefs.... When people begin to criticise the practices, they simply say, ‘you are Wahhabi’,” Asri told WSJ.
He defended his position on Islam, pointing out that the religion blesses everyone regardless of race or religion and that any other interpretation that leads to “injustice, oppression, hostility to other people, ignorance, caste systems in society, racism and fanaticism that doesn’t respect the rights of others” should be rejected.
“Islam must be described as a religion of love for others, with a respect for rights, respect for knowledge, rejecting superstition and basing all practices on real arguments,” he said, when pointed out that his interpretation of Islam has often been linked to Wahhabism.
Asri said Malaysia’s Muslim society needs “tajdid”, which he defined as the restoration of Islam’s original look and the innovation of certain elements to fulfil “contemporary needs”.
“A lot of the contemporary issues we are encountering these days were not known in the past. To ensure a continuous survival of society, various new opinions are required.
“The opinions of preceding theologians may not be wrong, but may have expired due to changes in time and circumstance,” he said.

Aung San Suu Kyi Meets Myanmar's President
The Nobel Peace Prize winner met the leader at the presidential residence in the nation's administrative capital, Naypyitaw, on Friday, the New Light of Myanmar said.
A spokesman for the National League for Democracy (NLD), Suu Kyi's party, confirmed to CNN that their talks lasted about an hour, but did not know what was discussed. However, Nyan Win said he thought the meeting "may be the first step towards national reconciliation."
Suu Kyi is expected to return from Naypyitaw to Yangon, the country's main city, later Saturday, he said. Once there, she will meet with party members to discuss their agenda.A week ago, Suu Kyi made her first political trip outside Yangon since her release from house arrest last November, visiting the northern town of Bago.
She has spent most of the past two decades in some form of detention but was freed a week after an election was held on November 7 -- the country's first in two decades.
The NLD was barred from taking part in the ballot because it refused to register under the country's new constitution, which automatically made it illegal.
The constitution requires more than 100 military nominees in parliament, which critics say is aimed at tightening the regime's grip on Myanmar. Critics also raised concerns the election would create a facade of democracy..
The NLD intends to present its case over the legal status of the party to the United Nations Human Rights Council, Nyan Win said.
Muslim Religious leaders say nothing wrong with Muslims receiving Christian aid
The stance was established this evening when the leaders, including Perlis Mufti Dr Juanda Jaya and Council of Churches Malaysia general secretary Reverend Dr Hermen Shastri, huddled together at a closed-door function here in a forum to discuss the role of religious institutions in disbursing help to the needy.

So Alex, Please Zip your Racism and Ignorance or stay away from Malaysia & Singapore! You can't even defferentiate prayers and the Opening Of Fast! The Opening Of Fast comes with Azan, What is so wrong with that?!!! I am A Roman Catholic By The Way.
A man has generated heated debate online after he posted comments questioning why McDonald's allowed the Muslim prayers to be played at one of its restaurants. The debate first started after a man known as Alex Chang posted his comments on the McDonald's Facebook wall on Thursday. He had asked why the fast food giant's outlets are playing the Muslim prayers during dinner time at its restaurants. "Can I request to play Buddhism chant on Vesak Day? Please advice," he asked sarcastically.
While he was identified as a SingTel employee, it was uncertain how this came to light. Chang also did not state the McDonald's outlet which he was referring to. SingTel could not be reached when contacted by Yahoo! Singapore.
His remarks on the issue drew a few comments explaining that the reason could be Muslims are breaking their fast. In response, Chang said, "Not trying to be disrespectful. But a bit irritating during dinner time. Not respecting other religion(s) at all." "By the way, can you tolerate if they play Buddhist chime in the restaurant?" he added.
This was the exchange which took place when Alex Chang first posted his comments on the McDonald's Facebook!
Posting a statement on its Facebook page on Friday, the fast food chain stressed that it respects all races and religions equally, adding that it had to remove some posts from its wall.
"We hope everyone understands that we've had to remove a number of wall posts on our page. We encourage all our Facebook fans to be respectful to one another," it said.
Two hours after McDonald's posted the statement, Chang issued an apology for his comments, saying that it was not meant to be "racist".
"I would like to apologise for the comment that was posted on the McDonald's website. It was not meant to be a racist remark which has offended so many people including our Malay friends. Sorry for my ignorance," he said.
Meanwhile in a separate statement on its Facebook page, SingTel emphasised that it is an "equal opportunity employer" and has a diverse and multicultural workforce.
"We have clear company values and guidelines and do not tolerate discrimination. We expect our employees to be personally responsible for the content of their personal posts online. "We are disappointed that an employee recently posted comments that were seen to be inappropriate and we are counselling him," it said.

U.S., Europe call for Syrian leader al-Assad to step down
"The future of Syria must be determined by its people, but President Bashar al-Assad is standing in their way," President Barack Obama said in a written statement. "We have consistently said that President Assad must lead a democratic transition or get out of the way. He has not led. For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside."
The leaders of Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the European Union echoed Obama's demand.
"Our three countries believe that President Assad, who is resorting to brutal military force against his own people and who is responsible for the situation, has lost all legitimacy and can no longer claim to lead the country," British Prime Minister David Cameron, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a joint statement.
"We call on him to face the reality of the complete rejection of his regime by the Syrian people and to step aside in the best interests of Syria and the unity of its people."
U.S. officials, who asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the matter, have said they expect similar calls for al-Assad to step down in coming days from other leaders.
American authorities also imposed new economic sanctions against Damascus Thursday, freezing Syrian government assets in the United States, barring Americans from making new investments in that country and prohibiting any U.S. transactions relating to Syrian petroleum products, among other things.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the United States "will take steps to mitigate any unintended effects of the (new) sanctions on the Syrian people."
"These actions strike at the heart of the regime," Clinton said, noting that the United States expects other countries "will amplify the steps we are taking."

Putin 'castrated' democracy in Russia
The ex-Soviet leader was interviewed by the BBC's Bridget Kendall on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the failed coup which led to the collapse of the USSR. The action was aimed at reversing reforms overseen by Mr Gorbachev.
Mr Putin, the current prime minister, radically changed the voting system during his two terms as president.
He is widely tipped to stand again in 2012 and previously won landslide victories in 2000 and 2004.
Mr Gorbachev, 80, the Soviet Union's first and last unelected president, stood for election as Russian president in 1996, when he took less than 1% of the vote against his old foe, Boris Yeltsin.

Suu Kyi invited to economic forum in Burma's capital
Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is to join an economic forum in the capital Naypyidaw at the invitation of the government.
Local business leaders and representatives of all registered political parties will also attend.
It will be the first time Aung San Suu Kyi has visited the purpose-built capital since its construction in 2005.
The news comes amid signs that the nominally civilian government is trying to soften its image.
Meeting with president?
There are several firsts involved in this trip. It is the first time Aung San Suu Kyi will see her country's remote capital and the first time the government has invited her to take part in an official forum. It is also potentially the first opportunity for her to meet Burma's new president, former general, now civilian Thein Sein.
It is not clear what role Aung San Suu Kyi will play in the meeting, but her decision to go is a sign of compromise on her part. Having criticised the election process that brought the government to power, she could now be seen as offering tacit recognition by accepting its invitation.
This is the latest in a series of carefully calibrated moves designed to show the new administration reaching out to former foes. Aung San Suu Kyi was, last weekend, allowed to travel outside her home town of Rangoon on an overtly political trip.
There is a process underway, but where it will lead is still very much open to question.
Air Asia's Tony Fernandes Owns QPR
The owner of low-cost airline AirAsia purchased a 66% controlling stake in the West London club from Formula One chief Bernie Ecclestone and Flavio Briatore. The Mittal family, led by steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, will retain their 33% shareholding.
The 47-year old, who was educated in England, admitted he actually followed London rivals West Ham as a youngster but he has "a soft spot" for QPR having lived near the stadium. "I've always wanted to be involved in football and the appeal of a London Club, like QPR, was too good an opportunity to turn down," he told a press conference at the club's Loftus Road stadium. "QPR is a raw diamond and hopefully I can contribute into turning it into a diamond."He will take over as Chairman of QPR Holdings Ltd and be joined on the board by joint Tune Group owner Kamarudin Bin Meranun.
The club also revealed Amit Bhatia will resume his position as Vice Chairman -- he left the club earlier this year following a disagreement with the previous board.
QPR won promotion to the Premier League last season, after more than 15 years out of England's top division. The move will earn the club, which went into financial administration in 2001, an estimated $66 million from broadcasting income and other sponsorship.
However Fernandes told CNN he was not a financial "sugar daddy" and planned to build the club sustainably. "Even if there was a sugar daddy or a sugar mummy, one day that tap would switch off, he said. "That drug is so deep that the club wouldn't be able to respond to not having a gravy-train of cash. "But if you would a good infrastructure, it doesn't matter who's leading this club, it will go forward."
He told reporters at a press conference Thursday that his ambitions for the club would be realistic. "I could easily say we're going to win the Champions League and the Premier League, but that's really not my style," he said.
"I don't want to make big promises I can't guarantee. I want the fans to be proud of what we're doing and be involved as much as we can. The fans pay good money and are stakeholders, so whatever we do, I want the fans to be proud. We'll do it in style and with integrity.
Far from a novice in the world of professional sport, Fernandes is also the team principal of Formula One's Team Lotus, after spotting the opportunity to reintroduce the legendary carmaker to top level motor racing in 2009. The team went on to achieve their target of tenth place in the FIA Formula One World Championship the following year.
Fernandes hails new Lotus deal
Fernandes believes many people have yet to realize the value of sport as a brand. He said the success of his airline -- which in 10 years has gone from flying 200,000 to 32 million passengers -- was linked to its association with sport.
"We've grown this way because we've invested in sport, be it in referees, Manchester United or Formula One," he said.
"So it's all part of interacting and building a community. People need hotels, they love sport, they love entertainment and they need to fly to different places. They are all inter-linked.
"Football is a fantastic branding platform."
After graduating from the London School of Economics in 1987, the entrepreneur worked as an accountant for Richard Branson's Virgin Records brand from 1987 to 1989.
The amateur guitarist went on to become vice-president for Southeast Asia for Warner Music Group from 1992 to 2001.
In a dramatic change of direction, Fernandes left the music industry to buy AirAsia, a bankrupt carrier -- the purchase cost him a token fee of 26 cents.
Since taking over the low fare, no frills airline, he has become known as the Branson of air travel in Asia, a reference to the British entrepreneur's own hugely successful move into the aviation industry.

Malaysia During The 50s To 70s
Malaysia Then was so Open & United. All races including the Malays sat together and drank together & I mean real drinking! Even The Tunku Drank In Public and There wasn't any sort of Moral or Religious Policing to Interefere in anybody's lives. The Muslims were given the freedon of choice and lifestyle. Many Malays lived their lives attending Missionary Schools and walking in Christian Fellowships for the fun of it, joinning the singing, yet never converted to Christianity unlike some bigots who fear this today.
Malaysia then was truely One Malaysia, every Malaysian mixed at everyone's home and religious grounds, there exsisted no boundaries, It was Truely A Blessed & United Country then until UMNO created the "Divide & Rule" Game & worked very hard to divide the races while programming the Malays. What we see today in Malaysia is the end result of UMNO.
Utusan Malaysia Ignorant About Holy Books & Islam
The Holy Quran Clearly States That Jesus Christ was a Prophet Before Muhammad and that Jesus Christ Will Return On Judgement Day. The Holy Bible is one of The Five Holy Books recognized by Islam & Muhammad.
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 17 — An Utusan Malaysia editor said today that Muslim primary schoolchildren are being taught about Jesus by Christian youths aiming to convert them, which is illegal under Malaysian law.
Its assistant chief editor Datuk Zaini Hassan wrote in his column today that poor Malay children living in squatters along Jalan Klang Lama were singing “Yes, I know Jesus loves me” and reciting the story of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion in their primary school.
He said that an Indian teacher from the school, known only as Cikgu S, had informed him Malay children were being given free English classes by young Christian evangelists every Sunday.
“To me, what is happening in these tuition classes is a subtle move. It is not done out of fun,” he wrote in the Umno-owned newspaper today, adding that the same was true of a dinner held in Damansara Utama Methodist Church (DUMC) last week.
The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) was accused of raiding and interrupting a thanksgiving dinner held by a local NGO but the religious authority said that it was acting on a complaint that 12 Muslims were being proselytised at the event.
“This is not a coincidence but planned in detail,” Zaini added. In his Cuit column in the Umno-owned daily, he said that Cikgu S told him how the students from Standard One to Six “could sing with vigour songs that praise Jesus.”
“They can even tell stories about Jesus including how he was crucified,” he quoted Cikgu S as saying.
Zaini said that he understands that the school has sent a complete report to the local education department for further action.
Utusan Malaysia’s latest claim comes on the back of heightened tension between Christian and Muslim groups over Jais’ actions against DUMC.
Earlier this year, the Malay daily also accused the opposition DAP of conspiring with church leaders to turn Malaysia into a Christian state and install a Christian prime minister.
The unsubstantiated report had further raised the mercury as the dispute over whether Christians can use the word Allah to describe their god remains unresolved.
The government was also forced to order the release of 35,100 Malay-language bibles that were seized by Customs ahead of the April 16 state polls in Sarawak, which has the largest Christian population in the country.

Senator Penny Wong's Private Life A Non Issue
They conceived using IVF with the help of an anonymous sperm donor. Ms Wong decided to announce the news earlier this week because she acknowledged there would be interest from the public as a result of her high-ranking position within the government and because she wanted to protect her pregnant partner from any undue publicity.
Though a strong advocate of same-sex marriage - a stance that puts her at odds with Prime Minister Julia Gillard - Ms Wong said she was not making a political point.
''You have a child because you want a family and you want to have the opportunity of raising a child together," she told Phillip Coorey of the Sydney Morning Herald.
"You don't have a child to make a political statement." Julia Gillard publicly congratulated her friend and trusted colleague, as did Julie Bishop, the acting opposition leader.
Finally, Ms Wong is yet another reminder of the changing face of Australia. She is not only the first openly gay federal cabinet minister, but the first Asian-born minister. She came to Australia from Malaysia.
To these firsts, I dare say she would like another: that of being the first Australian politician to take part in a same-sex marriage.
It's None Of Your Fucking Business Minister Jamil Khir Baharom!
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 — Islamic Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom claimed social problems will arise if a self-confessed gay Malaysian pastor proceeds with his wedding soon.
Rev Ou Yang Wen Feng, 41, and his African-American partner are planning to tie the knot at the end of the month in New York and hold a reception later in Malaysia.
“It is one of the tenets of liberals; they believe in freedom in the name of extreme human rights.
“We agree with human rights but such extremism that allows man and man to marry will create social problems,” he told reporters after the launch of the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Al-Hijrah Surau here at the Pantai Ria housing project.
The minister said Malaysian civil law does not allow same-sex marriages. “To me, as the minister in the Prime Minister Department in the religious context, I think it will encourage liberalism in Malaysia and this understanding is worrisome,” he said.
Jamil Khir stopped short of saying the marriage should be stopped, but added that the relevant authorities will take the appropriate action. Ou Yang, who now serves at the Metropolitan Community Church in New York, said he planned to come back to Malaysia for holidays next year after his wedding to partner Phineas Newborn III, 47, a Broadway musical producer.
He said his “coming out” took place in 2006 after nine years of childless union with his now ex-wife, whom he described as an “angel”. Ou Yang grew up in a conservative Christian family.
Ou Yang, a former columnist with Sin Chew Daily, is currently in Hong Kong promoting his book on homosexuality and Christianity.

Utusan Malaysia A Bunch Of Bigots!
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — Utusan Malaysia today condemned a Malaysian gay pastor’s planned marriage to his partner, and demanded that the government stop it from happening.
Writing as Awang Selamat, a pseudonym used by the Umno-owned daily’s editors, the paper stressed that Malaysian society’s value system based on religious tolerance could not be compromised.
“Malaysian gay pastor Ou Yang Wen Feng’s attempt to break this value system to marry the same gender in this country has to be opposed. In fact the government has to act to block him.
“Day by day we see various attempts to destroy our value system and Pastor Ou is doing it in the open,” Awang said.
Ou Yang, 41, and his African-American partner are planning to tie the knot at the end of the month in New York and hold a reception later in Malaysia.
Same-sex marriages in New York state became legal on July 24 under the Marriage Equality Act. The new law makes New York the largest state in the US where gay and lesbian couples will be able to wed, giving the national gay-rights movement new momentum from the state where it was born.
Other states in the US that permit same-sex marriages are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont, as well as the District of Columbia.
Gays and lesbians’ rights are not recognised in Malaysia. The country retains a colonial-era penal code criminalising sodomy. Social attitudes towards the gay community are also shaped by Islam, the official religion in Malaysia. (This Draconian BULLSHIT MUST END!!!)
Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is currently facing sodomy charges for the second time in his life. He was charged with sodomy and corruption in 1998 after he was sacked from the Cabinet, and was later convicted and jailed for both offences.
Although being gay is frowned upon in Malaysia as well as in most Asian countries, more homosexuals are coming out in the open.
In a diplomatic note to Washington DC that was leaked by whistleblower site Wikileaks through the Malaysia Today website, US Ambassador James R. Keith had said a recent Cabinet member and some of Datuk Seri Najib Razak’s senior aides would have found themselves under investigation for homosexual “behaviour” if the government were on a morals campaign”.
“His openness will not succeed if the authorities have a strong fortress. If the authorities move aggressively, then such problems can be handled,” Utusan Malaysia said today of the gay pastor’s plans.
The mouthpiece for the largest party in the ruling coalition also blamed the social media network which has also been used to “cultivate a perverse culture” among our youths, saying that “this phenomenon is worrisome”.
“So, Awang is pleading to all parties, Islamic NGOs to look into this issue seriously. Seminars regarding this phenomenon should be organised so a rescue formula will be shaped.
“If in the ‘60s we speak of the incoming flow of the hippie and yellow culture from the West, a more dangerous inflow is now increasingly infiltrating our system. The inflow is trying to break our faith fortress,” the paper said.
And i like these comments very much:

Who is Utusan to talk about morals ?, when its own morals are in the "longkang". Belum bankrupt ke, UTUSAN ni? The pastor is getting married in the US and not in Malaysia, he will hold a reception later in Malaysia. What laws has he broken? UTUSAN thinks Malaysia is a communist country? We are a democratic country la, UTUSAN. Lagi baik untuk Malaysia, kalau UTUSAN tutup kedai dan pi jual goreng pisang!
Just me 17 hours ago Report Abuse
I totally agree with redfaceindian : they are not getting married in Malaysia - they are just celebrating their union here. So they have not broken any of our archaic, outdated laws. So what is the big issue about it all? We have other bigger problems in the country - so don't get your panties in a bunch for a non-issue like this.Besides, they have done something (maybe not agreeable or acceptable to some parties), and now they wish to celebrate and share their joy with those who support them and are also happy for them.
They are not breaking any laws, they are not organizing a street party or a rally - so why should anyone interfere? What right would anyone have to stop them from holding a reception party? Our laws in Malaysia need to be updated - but that off course will be a long way off because while many in the country talk about tolerance and acceptance, and of a loving and caring society, most of them only do so in lip service - in actual fact, they do not know the real meaning of tolerance hence they are totally unable to understand, let alone practise it.
So until then, just stop making an issue out of this and instead, be happy that someone else has found joy and happiness in his life. If Malaysia is truly a tolerant society, let it show - but that of course will be an insurmountable challenge for those who are in truth bigots, just wearing a cloak of tolerance.

Malaysian Indians Being Forced To Convert To Islam, Their British Lawyer Barred & Deported!
KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia Saturday deported a British lawyer for a group of ethnic Indian activists who allege discrimination of their minority community in the Southeast Asian country, officials said.British lawyer Imran Khan arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Friday but immigration authorities prevented him from entering the country and instead sent him back to London 12 hours later.
Immigration Department director general Alias Ahmad confirmed Khan was deported early Saturday as he was a "prohibited immigrant" but declined to comment further.S. Jayathas, a coordinator for Hindraf, which lobbies for more rights for Malaysia's ethnic Indian minority, said Khan had planned to stay a week to meet community members who have faced difficulties, such as getting identity cards or being forced to convert to Islam."They deported him," Jayathas told AFP, adding that officials only told Khan they were following police instructions "from higher authorities" without being given any other reason."(His visit) will bring awareness that the Indian minority has been cheated for the past 54 years of their rights... They want to suppress that information," Jayathas said.
Frankly, I had my doubts on what HINDRAF was up to. A lot of people claim that HINDRAF is a barrier to a united Malaysia. But the Indians have legitimate issues which both sides of the divide - Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat - ignore.I actually feel quite encouraged that someone from the UK is willing to listen to their grievances. If I've got it right, this Imran Khan is an experienced lawyer in the field of human rights and his take on this case would be very valuable.
Thankyou http://crankshafted.blogspot.com/
Ibrahim Ali A Liability To UMNO
Not to be outdone by another fast-rising rabble-rouser Ezam Mohd Nor, Perkasa president Ibrahim Ali and his motley group of self-proclaimed defenders of the Malay race are back again stirring up trouble.
This time, their hapless victim is the Star, the newspaper owned by the MCA but which many say is controlled by UMNO.
"I think we should 'chop' the Star as an anti-Islam. I don't accept the explanation that it was a mistake. We all know who the Star editor is," Ibrahim Ali told reporters after chairing a Perkasa supreme council meeting on Sunday.
“I believe that they are testing the limits of Muslim tolerance." Umno's new terrible twins: Ibrahim-Ezam. But to many who follow the local political scene, his words were puzzling since the top Star editors have been frequently accused of bending backwards for Prime Minister Najib Razak. Just a year or so ago, UMNO even awarded a cash prize to one of its editorial team for being the most "friendly" paper towards their party.
This led critics to say that Ibrahim Ali was "running out of issues" and trying to stay relevant and a step ahead of new rival for the affections of the Malay community, UMNO Senator Ezam Mohd Nor.
"Ibrahim Ali is scraping the bottom of the barrel," said PKR stalwart Eddie Wong. "He is running out of issues. If he doesn't make noise, heit won;t work either. will be seen as irrelevant. Since the disgrace of the UiTM Ibrahim li Leadership Award, the UMNO elite finally realized he was a liability and not an assets as he thinks. This may be why Ezam has been tasked by Najib to take over the lead singer role in the UMNO-Perkasa band. But he will also flop."
"Pijak", "pijak" (Like Mad Dogs!)
The Star had published a feast of pork dishes in its food section but under the unfortunate title of 'Ramadan Delights'. Pork is banned to Muslims and a long-standing taboo. The daily has apologised and answered a show-cause letter issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
But like Perkasa, Home Minister Hishammuddin Hussein has rejected the Star's explanation, prompting accusations he was trying to impress Muslims with his Islamic credentials during the fasting month.
Meanwhile, Perkasa members carried out a small but very nosiy ceremony burning the Star newspapers as a sign of protest. Members pointed a keris (the symbol of Malay supremacy) at the newspaper, before setting it on fire a. They then "pijak" or stamped on the burning copies of the tabloid.
“I believe that they are testing the limits of Muslim tolerance," said Ibrahim Ali.
Do "something" to the govt (Kepala Hotak Si Katak Tu!)
Ibrahim also threatened to “do something” to the government if it fails to take action over three outstanding matters, the Bersih 2.0 July 9 rally for free and fair elections, the Datuk T sex video against Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim and the DAP’s “Christian conspiracy”
“What more do we need? What more needs to be investigated? There were 4,000 police reports lodged against Ambiga, for example. We want the Attorney-General to proceed with action on these issues and whether or not there is a prima facie case, let the courts decide,” said Ibrahim.
“We have been called cowards for not going ahead with our rally when all we did was respect the law and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s decree.
So now, if the government takes no action within a reasonable period of time, we will take action and at that time, the government should not blame Perkasa. We have been told to respect the government and the law, and we have done all that, and yet the government has been unresponsive.”
